The Course: Mastering the Decision Gate Process
Mastering the Decision Gate Process: an online course you can start today
Turn your project approval meetings back into real decisions.
On big projects, the key moments are the gates: the meetings where a project gets a "yes", a "not yet" or a "no" before it moves on to the next phase. When gates work, the right projects go ahead and the wrong ones stop early. When they don't, they become presentations that everyone nods through.
This course shows you how to set up, run and keep improving gates that make good decisions.
What is it?
An online course you take at your own pace. There are no set dates. Start whenever you like, and watch on your computer or phone.
Who is it for?
People who build, run or depend on gates:
Setting it up: you lead a PMO, governance or portfolio team, and you want a process that fits your organization instead of a copied template.
Fixing it: you're a sponsor or decision maker, and you want gate reviews that lead to real decisions, including the decision to stop.
Working in it: you're a project or development manager, and you want to know exactly what each gate needs from you.
What's inside?
About 30 short video lessons across eight modules. Many take 15 minutes or less, so you can learn between meetings.
A course workbook with the key ideas, diagrams and an exercise for every module.
An Excel toolkit with 16 ready-to-use tools, including a phase and gate map, a "who does what" chart, a gate review checklist, a decision log, a risk register and a 6-month rollout plan.
A maturity assessment. It has 18 questions and takes about 25 minutes. You get a score out of 90 that shows how well your gates work today and where to start.
A certificate when you finish the final review.
Course Q&A, a space just for students, where I answer your questions.
What will you be able to do?
Explain why your organization needs gates, and what goes wrong without them
Sketch the phases, gates and roles for your own projects
Run a gate meeting that makes a real decision
Plan risk and assurance reviews that help your team instead of slowing it down
Leave with your own 6-month plan to put it in place in your organization
